In Chicago, 1908 U.S. socialist women celebrated a Women’s Day giving rise to solidarity from international women collaborating on the horizon. In Germany 1910, Luise Zietz and Clara Zetkin were inspired by their foresisters, and proposed at the International Women’s Conference, a proclamation to establish an annual International Women’s Day, endorsed by women from over 17 countries. A day for commemorating working women’s struggles both personal and political, at home and life at large – stressing the need to advance history for all with demands including equal pay in the workplace, and equal rights in law, all of which we still battle to this day. Inform The Kolo is informed and the Kolo informs. Narratives and trauma care practices are shared across the world, where the audience powerfully witnesses. The first person story of the witness heals the first person story of the affected. Suffering in silence has been for too long the accepted way of surviving and it has diminished our voices and vocabulary. To inform, reestablishes the power in language and expands our vocabulary. This allows a subtle evolution and revolution within both the witness and the affected. We realize we know and sense more than what we can express and we engage instinct as a partner. Intensify With the work underway and information streaming between witness and affected, our efforts begin to Intensify. As witnesses, we strip away the veil of avoidance. Blood & Honey the Secret Herstory of Women Book Excerpt Storied Instructions In Travnik, Bosnia, a group of internally displaced refugees huddled in a dilapidated gymnasium more than ten years after the war. Electricity was turned off by the municipality, making the search for firewood a life and death priority. When the Novi Travnik, Kolo Sumejja women came with their huge bags of flour, oil, milk, cheese, and juice, the refugees were profoundly moved. Funded with a donation from an American woman, Cindy Escott, the Kolo Sumejja women did not hoard the cash and promptly designated it to those in most need. At the end of the gathering with the Travnik refugees, a cassette tape was played. An old kolo, round dance, and song sliced through the air as we all danced the steps out of the cold and filthy gymnasium that had a foul smell seeping into our pores. The women refugees were crying and said how they had not heard that song since before the war. The female solidarity was felt despite the stench of poverty and despite a caste system rivaling India’s social hierarchy. Observing how a scratchy old cassette tape on a 1980’s boom box propelled the kolo dancing and song amongst the females ─ both living in the gymnasium and visiting ─ is in actuality bearing witness to the miracle manifestation found in Slavic Thaumaturgy. • Reflect back into your life. Thom’s study of Megalithic stone circles as observatories and astronomical machines that gave rise to the evidence that the Megalithic peoples knew the ritual year was 366 days –basically the 360/366 degree circle and the earth’s rotation around the sun. Within the round dances of the kolo or to be in a circle for South Slavs, we experience bodily the formula for the measurement of our planet’s rotations around the sun based on the movement of Venus. To track the movement of the planet Venus over a forty-year cycle is the basis of our current measurement system and calendar year. The Megalithic Yard is in our memories haunting the very essence of rituals and traditions. Think of our calendar today. Our form of measurement is this universal measurement system. Circle formats prevail across the globe. Memory circles through the generations not needing a written alphabet or library. Via oral memory practice, South Slavs effortlessly repeat and reproduce social intelligence and ancestral customs/rituals with each new generation. We could be talking about the neurobiology of memory and how our brain and bodies store memory in much the same way. All the processes are circular with interconnectivity that in the end demands wholeness. Basically, we are all one or as the South Slavic peoples say, we are all one family. Blood & Honey Storied Instructions Within the Dayton Accord, the Bosnian city and town of Tulsa and Srebrenica are placed in the dotted lines of the Republic of Srpska as opposed to hundreds of years being referred to as Bosnia. The slaughter and deaths of Srebrenica male relatives during the Balkan War known as Bosnia prior to 1991 were committed by the Serbs of the Republic of Srpska. Families that remembered their Bosnian genealogy now are disenfranchised or dislocated from their mythic narratives, cultural memory pertaining to geographical narratives with the new Dayton Accord geographic carving up of former Yugoslavia. What was Bosnian prior to 1991 now is recounted to be the Republic of Srpska or Serbian. A Muslim war survivor from Novi Travnik, Fatima quipped after the release of three Croatian war criminals responsible for the Ahmica/Vittez war criminals in 2001,” now they have us killing ourselves,” to point to the manipulation of judicial systems or governing policies. The same can be said for the Srebrenica war crimes survivors, mostly women and children who at one point could say their ages long Bosnian origins as Serbs attacking and killing Bosnian Muslims but now according to the Dayton Accord, it was Serbs murdering Serbs. We only have to look in the Yugoslav War Crimes Tribunal Trail transcripts for June 8, 1993, which describes the armed conflict between HVO and the army of Bosnia-Herzegovina and violent events in Vitez. The transcript reads that it was alleged on or about May 15, 1993, Witness A, a female approximately 45 years old living in Vitez was arrested by the Croatian squad called “Jokers.” She was taken to the Holiday Cottage and placed in a large room with a group of soldiers. A knife was placed to her throat, stomach and inner thigh with a threat to stab her vagina if she did not speak the truth. The defense maintained that Witness A was mistaken due to the series of traumatic events she endured and “the lapse of time since the events.” Additionally, the defense attorneys pointed out the psychological treatment at Medica Clinic (Bosnian for Medical Clinic) in Zenica- a half-hour ride from Vittez, which literally made her memory unreliable. Blood & Honey: Secret Herstory of Women A year after September 11th, 2001, I continued my Kolo Trauma work with the Novi Travnik Kolo Sumejja women despite the hatred swirling in the aftermath of the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York City by an all-male group of terrorists. The town of Ahmica, site of the massacre of 150 Muslims during a morning call to prayer during the Balkan Wars, is about two kilometers away from Novi Travnik. The majority of the few survivors are grandmothers who were tending the cows in nearby fields and were forced simply to watch the slaughter of their families, unable to help. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was established to try each individual accused of war crimes or crimes against humanity. To witness and to hear the whispers of Mother Nature from these Ahmica women—more melodious than the bugles and military parades of dead, patriarchal ceremonies—is to live and breathe female sovereignty. I was experiencing my first female evocation of the White Birch Tree Council. Perhaps, as a tribute to the huge water reservoir, the Fish Goddesses were important relics for burials and a part of the architectural structures consisting of temples not residences. The impressive fact is age of Lepenski Vir dated to the time of Mesolithic-Neolithic transition 6300-5950 BCE. According to the late Dr. Marija Gimbutas the shrines had the Fish Goddess and the Bird Goddess artifacts at the head of their altars. The oral memory traditions for memorals are associated with burial practices (6500-5500 BCE). Graves were nearby and rock cut tombs. The graves site was single, and found in threes.
